BRIDGNORTH AND THE LOCAL AREA
Bridgnorth
Often referred to as "The Jewel of the Severn" Bridgnorth occupies one of the most spectacular inland town settings in England. In 1642 King Charles described the view from the castle walk as "the finest in my domain".
The lower part of the town, Low Town (known in the middle ages as "The Basa Villa"-basin of the town), straddles the magnificent River Severn whilst the upper portion, High Town, is perched dramatically on top of hundred foot sandstone cliffs. The two are linked by a series of historic steps, the Cartway and the unique cliff railway.
The Northern terminus of the 'Severn Valley Railway' is a short walk from the Severn Arms, whislt 'Daniels Mill' the largest waterwheel powered cornmill in England and the National Trusts Dudmaston Hall are only a short drive away.
